Right after you join GBO, you’ll meet your leaders and other students in your GBO subgroup at an orientation event. You will have this group all over GBO. Students will engage in discussion and community building with a small group of peers and leaders (OLs). OL Options is when your OLs choose programming for your specific group.

Food is available throughout the GBO. You will have a designated place and time for each meal. You may be participating in the program and moving through the program. Wealth Show. All restaurants can accommodate catering needs.
During the convocation, Chancellor Carol Crist and the school board will officially welcome the incoming class to UC Berkeley. This is an opportunity to integrate the incoming freshman class and welcome them to the larger campus.
Welcoming Students is a program in partnership with the Transfer Center whose primary goal is to welcome all transfer students into the Berkeley community and explore the services and resources they offer.

Retreat sessions are a special time to connect with Resident Assistants (RAs) and full-time staff in university housing. These people provide basic information about your new home and will continue to be your resource after the GBO ends.
The drop-in program provides an opportunity to get to know the campus and surrounding areas and to have fun on campus and in the surrounding area. Best of all, the evening program allows freshmen groups and other freshmen to meet and have fun! While programming is scheduled throughout the night, these events are optional. The program does not run after 10:00pm each day.
College programs include programs designed by each college (eg, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Natural Resources). During these events, there will be a one-on-one meeting about what to expect from your college and career. Check out the Cal Events app for specific events relevant to your industry. Cal’s 2022 23 Pac 12 Game Dates Announced
Cal to Career Connections is a presentation of the Career Center. The presentation features several mentors with professional insights and community resources to give advice on how to advance your career. We understand that this time limit is limited to college programs and may not be available to everyone.
The Campus Resource Fair introduces incoming students to 40+ campuses, including Berkeley Study Abroad and University Health Services. This presentation will be live and you will be able to connect directly with staff from various departments in the school.
The Bear Foundation is designed to start or continue conversations about community and identity among freshmen. After a large-group process and small-group discussion, students learn about UC Berkeley’s principles of community, otherness, and belonging and express their identities and relationships on campus. New students feel they can play an active role in building a safe and healthy culture in Cal and leave the program with a vision of how to improve their Cal community. We expect freshmen to continue their knowledge of exploring stories of identity, intersectionality, and community building through different platforms and media.

Exchange students have the opportunity to learn professional advice and information from students working in a variety of industries. Freshmen will set aside a special time on Saturday to attend Freshman Blend.
Students can hear from some of our advisors about their golden years at Berkeley. The goal of My Golden Years is to introduce students to the diverse and valuable student experiences at Berkeley.
Bear Convention is a mandatory feature that teaches you important issues facing college students: sexual violence and harassment, related policies, reporting methods and resources, mental health, peer involvement, and alcohol and drug use. Learn about the many ways to live a balanced life and conserve resources on campus. You can find strategies for caring for friends, classmates, and roommates.
Berkeley High School
After two days at GBO, we know you’ll want to spend more time exploring Telegraph Street and trying one of the many amazing restaurants around campus. Introduction to the City of Berkeley tells the history of the new city and includes dinner at a local restaurant.
Your Berkeley experience extends beyond campus, and we know many of you are eager to explore the Bay Area. A Day on the Bay takes you to places around the Bay Area (past trips include SF MOMA, Patrol Center, Oakland Museum, Oakland Ice Rink, 90’s Museum, Bay Cruise). Check back closer to January for details on what options we have for January’s GBO. All transportation and tickets included.

During the admissions process and assessment process, US universities often evaluate applicants. In contrast, many non-U.S. institutions (such as Canada and China) make admissions decisions almost entirely based on GPA or test scores. In America’s schools, character and diversity are more valuable than academic results alone. When accepted, they often call each other to take the time to get to know the applicants.
Creativity, critical thinking, and creative achievement are highly valued in American schools. Schools in Europe and Asia tend to focus more on one or two exams. Participation in education, cooperation and other aspects are not highly significant. Since the marking system is mainly focused on one or two exams, teachers do not need to have a close relationship with students.
In the standard approach used by American universities, the four-year college curriculum attempts to establish breadth in the first two years of college before transitioning to two years of concentrated study.
