Stanford University Fall 2023 Calendar – On Friday, the Faculty Senate Steering Committee approved the 2020-21 academic calendar dates and the daily faculty meeting schedule beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 9:50 PM PT. These efforts reflect Stanford’s plan to enroll half of the undergraduate student population on campus each quarter.
The calendar consists of four 10-week quarters, including a summer quarter. The dates have been changed to give undergraduate students time to move in and out of campus each quarter and do not include final exam period. Graduate and professional programs do not have their own calendars these days.

Upcoming Academic Year To Consist Of Four 10 Week Quarters With No Final Exam Periods, Seven Week Winter Break
As in the spring quarter, there will be no final exam period in the 2020-21 school year. Church and Madgett said the decision to use multiple formative assessments throughout the quarter rather than one summative assessment was to “identify the challenges students may have in their distance learning environment.”
“He also recognized that the Stanford Honor Code was not written for a distance learning environment, and it would be difficult to adapt to the controlled environment of a 3-hour final exam on campus without the feedback he had taken at home. The requirement to avoid the unnecessary temptation to cheat,” they wrote.
The new class schedule includes hours for courses based on in-person or online learning and courses offered online only, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. Courses offered in person or online have the same start times to accommodate on-campus students taking a combination of the two.

The reason is that there is a 30-minute gap between classes “to allow safe entry and exit of students from classes between classes and to allow droplets to settle to reduce the possibility of transmission of COVID-19.”
Classes are offered in person or online for 60 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 80 minutes on Tuesdays and Fridays. Online classes only have the option of 80 minute classes also on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The model includes three- and four-hour blocks for individual test sessions.
Once the schedule is known, the meal times can be determined “so that the students can safely access the meal”.

Church and Madgett also asked for suggestions that “the Senate Administration Committee and the Provost discuss the appropriate numbering system” for the academic year.
“If there is no action to increase the S/NC base imposed in the spring, then all classes will return to the normal selection process,” they wrote.
“The Faculty Senate is free to issue any policy it chooses, including a requirement that any course using letter grades as a scoring method be required to include a CR/NC option. This may be considered for other options, such as holding the Faculty of Law,” Church and Madgett wrote.
Looking Beyond Pride Month

Stanford has long supported faculty, students and staff in observing the religious holidays that are important to them. In the difficult process of creating an academic calendar, religious holidays are only one consideration among many. University administration has always helped facilitate communication and encourage mutual respect and understanding when school calendars conflict with religious holidays.
Most teachers are consistent and flexible about religious treatment as long as there is proper and early communication. Students must work with their instructors first. If a student plans to miss class or take a test on a religious holiday, he must give this information to the teachers at the beginning of the quarter so that the student is not harmed by the practice. Students and teachers should plan for absences and missing class notes or lessons.
