A year later, he had expanded it to 14 international markets in 8 languages! Colin Custer achieved equally impressive results at One Acre Fund, where he led operations in Uganda. In 2019, the program was “on the verge of closure,” he says. Morale had hit “rock bottom” due to rampant corruption and a 50 percent drop in revenue. In response, Custer made some difficult decisions that led to the Yale case study.
“Within three months, we had changed performance enough to avoid closure,” he says. “In the following year, we not only exceeded our internal targets, but achieved the best results in all seven land programs of the One Acre Fund. When I left to attend Yale, we trained and promoted many Ugandan employees to senior management positions previously held only by foreign-educated individuals, the most in the history of the Ugandan program. Two years ago, Luke Demaskin suffered a shock when he moved to Malawi. While working with the country’s Ministry of Health to combat HIV, he soon faced a new threat: Covid-19. Worse, he relied on the support of countries that themselves were “looking” for resources such as drugs and clinical equipment to fight this new threat.
“I had to balance theoretically correct ‘answers’ with actual realities. For example, in a country with few trained anesthesiologists, increasing the number of ICU beds or ventilators was largely impossible. Despite many frustrating moments, my ministry colleagues and I clarified the country’s needs and coordinated with aid organizations to find the necessary to bring products to Malawi. However, due to the uncertain future of the pandemic, there are still challenges, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Yes, I am proud to support the country in such uncertain times.
Edward Wang’s vocation was to help people overcome uncertainty – even adversity. In Beijing, he founded a “mutual aid” organization called the Speakers and Listeners Club four years ago. The club, which cares for people with depression, connects people with “similar emotional experiences” through events in their cities.
