In 2019, the program was “on the verge of closure,” he says. Morale had hit “rock bottom” due to rampant corruption and a 50 percent drop in revenue. Two years ago, Luke Demaskin suffered a shock when he moved to Malawi. While working with the country’s Ministry of Health to combat HIV, he soon faced a new threat: Covid-19. Worse, he relied on the support of countries that themselves were “looking” for resources such as drugs and clinical equipment to fight this new threat.
“I had to balance theoretically correct ‘answers’ with actual realities. For example, in a country with few trained anesthesiologists, increasing the number of ICU beds or ventilators was largely impossible. Despite many frustrating moments, my ministry colleagues and I clarified the country’s needs and coordinated with aid organizations to find the necessary to bring products to Malawi. However, due to the uncertain future of the pandemic, there are still challenges, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Yes, I am proud to support the country in such uncertain times.
