Any changes to the board calendar will not take effect until the fall of 2023. They plan to re-evaluate the options at their next meeting on April 20.
A New Front Door For Uc San Diego
The Unalaska school board is considering changing the district’s calendar and is seeking input from the community.
At their meeting Wednesday, board members discussed three different options for the future school year schedule, one of which was created by member Kerry Mahoney. This pushes back the entire school year and puts the first day of school on September 5 two to three weeks later than usual.
“This [calendar] is proposed around what I think is good for family life,” Mahoney said at the meeting.

Skipping the entire month of August would allow families vacationing on the island to have more time to enjoy the short Aleutian summer, he said.
“I like the idea of enjoying the fullness of August before we get busy with school and sports,” Mahoney said.
Its draft moves from the end of the first quarter to the end of January before the winter break. Mahoney said it allows older kids to enjoy holiday gatherings and events more instead of stressing about finals, which are usually held before winter break begins.

High school athletic director and principal Jim Wilson said he is concerned that moving the first day of school to September could have negative effects on fall sports such as cross country and swimming.
He said the Alaska School Activities Association still expects districts to begin practices in August in preparation for regional and state tournaments.

“You might find that kids don’t want to swim or do cross country if they start a month or a month and a half later than everyone else,” Wilson said.
Mahoney’s calendar also pushes the last day of school to June 14, after the general dismissal in mid-May.
Cross-country coach and preschool teacher Johnny Scott said pushing school so far — when days add up to 17 hours — wears kids out mentally and physically.

“When you get to the end of June, and they’re two or three months old now, when they’re only getting seven hours of sleep, their brain can’t function and learn,” she said.
According to administrators, Mahoney’s draft could make summer school challenging because it pushes it to the end of the summer. Staff and parents at the meeting said families often don’t stick around until late summer.
Board members say they want to hear from community members about proposed drafts for the school year. The administration has not decided when the final selection will be made. If necessary, they can wait until the coming fall to choose.

Previous calendars, as well as a blank form — which community members are encouraged to fill out — can be found on the district’s website. The board’s drafts will be available online soon, administrators say.
