Topics have been announced for our Spring 2023 sections of IDIS 10605: Introduction to the Liberal Arts. Sessions 01 and 02 will focus on Human Rights, Victimization and Empowerment taught by Dr. Lee Roberts and Dr. Sherry Steiner. This course is a multidisciplinary introductory education in the human rights regime (eg law, UN, international courts, non-governmental organizations, human rights culture). A social science perspective will be used to understand how social forces contribute to both empowerment and victimization. A linguistic and literary approach will be used to understand the processes of victimization and empowerment. Trauma silences people, and often the first step to empowerment is finding their voice in history, sometimes in languages that are not their own. In contexts where the mother tongue has become a hostile language (e.g. German for Holocaust survivors), fiction and autobiographical texts become a means by which people deal with the complex and invisible psychic injuries caused by human trauma. With the help of fiction, you can change not only the story of your life, but also the words that create meaning. While social science tends to dismiss the once removed aspect of literature as disconnected from reality, literature emphasizes how the removed aspect can become an entry point for truth-telling about the reality of trauma. The course emphasizes collaborative/experiential learning to achieve human rights through human rights practice.
