Our approach to American Indian law is deeply rooted in Indian country, from the legacy of some of our oldest alumni, including noted legal advocate and intellectual Wynn Deloria ’70, and from our relationship with Rights Fund of Native Americans, founded by the late Dean. The American Indian Law Program provides opportunities for students to gain practical experience and serve Indian communities and tribes through the American Indian Law Clinic; externships at NARF, the Ute Tribe, and the Denver Indian Center; and clerkship opportunities at law firms and tribal courts. The law awards an American Indian Law Certificate that demonstrates that a focused study of legal issues facing Native Americans and American Indian tribes has been completed. This certificate is attractive to legal, tribal and government employers, as well as employers who wish to do business with tribes and tribal members.
Certificate requirements include: (1) a minimum of 92 credit hours (89 required for the J.D.), and (2) a minimum of 18 of 92 credit hours in designated Indian law and related courses Visit Law School Regulations for full details.

Founded in 1992, the American Indian Law Clinic, the first of its kind, provides quality legal representation to low-income clients with issues related to specific Indian law. Many in the Denver area have limited access to legal aid, and access is further restricted when the issue involves Indian law. When certain rights, guaranteed by some treaty, are denied, they have nowhere to go. The Clinic’s student attorneys provide hundreds of hours of pro bono legal work to assist these individuals with direct legal assistance when possible or to serve as referral sources when direct assistance is not possible.
In this one-year course, students will receive classroom instruction and practical experience with issues related to Indian law, focusing primarily on cases and projects with an Indian law aspect. The body of law addresses issues of “Special Indian law” – commonly known as federal Indian law – which deals with the status of Indian tribes and governs the legal relationship between the federal government, the states, and their citizens. All cases and projects accepted by the Clinic involve issues of federal Indian law or specific tribal law. Student attorneys handle cases under the supervision of licensed attorneys directed by the director of the American Indian Law Clinic.

Law students can get involved with NALSA by attending monthly membership meetings and logging into the NALSA TWEN site at Westlaw. NALSA officers coordinate events to promote awareness of American Indian issues in the law school and in the United States. NALSA officers raise money for these events and serve as NALSA representatives at law school and non-law school functions. NALSA members can form committees to raise funds, organize events and compete in the NALSA National Moot Court and participate in the Federal Bar Association’s annual Indian Law Conference.
On the NALSA TWEN site, students can find organizational information about NALSA, upcoming events, opportunities (court and writing contests, fellowships, scholarships, externships, clerkships, jobs, etc.) and members’ contributions to current local issues . There are also registration sheets for event volunteers, surveys and email access to NALSA membership.
Course Of Study 2022 2023 By The Brearley School
Every year in September, NALSA hosts a social event for new students to meet the existing NALSA membership. In early November, NALSA sponsors the Fall Harvest Feast, a Native American community potluck for law students, Indian Bar Association (CIBA) members, and members of the Native American community. NALSA has participated in the NALSA National Moot Court, the Federal Bar Association’s Indian Law Conference, the Denver March Pow Wow and CIBA’s annual Red Rock Ramble fundraiser. In 2009, CU NALSA co-hosted the 17th Annual NALSA Moot Court Competition with the University of Denver NALSA Chapter (event held in the Wolf Law Building).
Students will work with local Indian law firms, non-profit organizations serving the Native American community such as the Native American Rights Fund and the Intertribal Council on Utilities Policy, government agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tribal Programs and Southern Ute Tribal Court and Ute Mountain Tribe. Students work under the guidance of law faculty on American Indian and tribal legal research issues and provide much-needed legal work to those most in need.
The Indian Bar Association actively raises funds to provide scholarships for American Indian law and individuals studying law. The American Indian Graduate Center offers fellowship opportunities for law students.
