Onam is a 10-day Keralite festival. The most important day is the tenth day called Thiruvonam. Since it is an important day, the terms onam and tiruvonam are often used interchangeably. Shravan Nakshatra is known as Thiru Onam in Malayalam. Tiru Onam Puja is performed during Shravana / Thiruvonam Nakshatra in Chingam month according to Malayalam calendar. About Thiruvonam
Thiruvonam has 2 words – “Thiru” and “Onam”. “Tiru” means the holy one; It is equivalent to “Shree” in Sanskrit. People believe that every year on this day, King Maha Bali visits his people from the underworld (Patala Loka). Also, there are many beliefs associated with this festival like the birth of Vamana Avatar of Vishnu etc.
In Kerala there are 4 days holiday for this festival which starts 1 day before Thiruvonam and ends 2 days after Thiruvonam. These four days are called First Onam, Second Onam, Third Onam, and Fourth Onam. The second onam is the most important day thiruvonam.

Thiruvonam Celebrations 1. Since Thiruvonam is one of the most important festivals of Kerala, the people of Kerala try to make its celebrations as grand as possible. The festival begins 10 days before Thiru Onam, the first day of Onam known as Atham. 2. Day two i.e. Chithira, people start cleaning and decorating their houses on the tenth day, Tiru Onam. 3. The eighth day, i. H. Pooradam, the final shopping for the big day of Tiruvonam followed. 4. The ninth day i.e. Uthradom, last minute shopping such as fruits and vegetables etc. done. On the evening of the ninth day, people cut vegetables and do other necessary preparations for the big day. 5. On the morning of the tenth day, people get up early, take a bath, wear new clothes, and donate to the needy according to their performance. In many homes, the oldest member of the family carries the clothes for everyone. 6. Thiruvonam Puja and rituals should be performed during Thiruvonam/Shravan Nakshatra. 7. The house is cleaned by women and decorated with a carpet of flowers, especially in front of the main entrance of the house, welcoming the spirit of the king Bali. Rice paste is also used to make the pattern of the entrance in some houses. 8. A great festival called Onam Sadhya was also prepared for the king to receive his blessings. Onam Sadya is an important part of this festival. The festival cannot be celebrated without them. Those who celebrate Onam either prepare at home or go somewhere. The feast includes many dishes, usually 26; and served on the leaves of the banana plant. The dishes include different types of chips, buttermilk, sweets, lentils, pickles, etc. 9. There are many activities and cultural events in the evening. Lights, lights, etc. let the whole ambience shine after sunset. The story of Onam According to mythology, King Mahabali was very powerful. He rules all 3 Lokas – Bhu Loka (Earth), Deva Loka (Heaven) and Patala Loka (Underworld). Although he is a monster, he is generous and loves his people. But the devtas were not happy with him since he won them in heaven. So they asked Lord Vishnu to help them get their kingdom back. To help them, Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar, where he assumed the form of a dwarf Brahmin. Since Brahmins are considered gods and it is best to give them alms, when God visited him in this form, King Bali asked Vamana for his opinion. Vamana only needs his 3 levels of land. When the King told him to do these 3 steps, Vamana began to expand and grow. He placed his first foot in heaven, the second on earth, and because there was no room left to make his third step, the King gave him his head. Vamana pushed the king into the underworld with his third step. The way the King gave everything slowly, Lord Vishnu was pleased and asked for his blessings. Therefore, the king asked if he could visit his people once a year. The blessing has been received. Therefore, every year on this Thiruvonam day, King Mahabali visits his people. 10-day Onam Celebration in Kerala 1.Atham (First Day): On this day, people work every day in the morning and then go to the temple to worship. Breakfast of the day usually consists of steamed bananas and fried papad. This breakfast is eaten by many people throughout the Onam Festival. After that, people make an Onam embroidery (Pookalam). 2. Chithira (Second Day): The second day also begins with worship and prayer. Later, some fresh flowers are added to Pookkalam by women and men procuring flowers. 3. Chodhi (Day Three): Day three is very important because all the shops are getting ready for shopping and people are shopping to prepare for the big day of Thiruvonam. 4. Viskam (Fourth Day): On this day, embroidery competitions are held in various places. Women prepare pickles, fries, etc. for the anniversary. 5. Anizham (Day Five): The main attraction of today is the Great Snake boat race called Vallamkali. 6. Thriketa (Sixth Day): There are many rituals on this day. People of all ages participate and also visit their loved ones to add charm to the celebration. 7. Moob (Seventh Day): People are very happy today. The shops are decorated with different food items. Travelers enjoy many different cuisines. Women buy different things to decorate their homes. 8. Pooradam (Eighth Day): On this day, people make small clay pyramids. They call them “Maa” and give them beautiful flowers. 9. Uthiradam (Ninth Day): Also known as First Onam, it is a day of great joy when everyone looks forward to the arrival of their king. All the preparations went very well and the women made huge pookkalams. 10. Thiruvonam (Tenth Day): The auspicious day came and everyone started thinking about each other when their King Mahabali came to bless them. On this day the most beautiful carpet of flowers is made and beautiful Onam plate Sadhya is prepared. Many cultural events are organized in various places and fireworks add glamor to the ambiance. The day is also known as Second Onam. The Onam Festival continues for two more days after Thiruvonam, making it a full 12-day celebration. However, 10 days before Thiruvonam is considered as the main one. 11.Avittom (November Day): Also known as Third Onam, today people prepare for the king’s return. Some people bathe the statue of Onatappan in the river or sea, which they hold in the middle of their pookalam during 10 days. Then the carpet flowers are removed and washed. However, some people keep the flower carpet (pookalam) till twenty eight days after Thiruvonam. The famous Tiger Dance (Pulikali) is still performed today. 12.Chathayam (Twelfth Day): The whole festival ends with a grand dance.
