Lenten 2023 Calendar – Lent 2023 begins on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 (for 53 days) and ends on Saturday, April 8, 2023 (for 97 days). Calendar for 2023
Lent is the annual Christian season that precedes Easter. The dates of Lent are defined by the date of Easter, which is a floating holiday, meaning that it falls on a different date each year. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and its observance (though not liturgically timed as Sundays are not fast days and therefore do not count – see below) lasts 40 days, reflecting the 40 days spent Jesus fasted in the desert before his ministry began. . It also appears to reflect the 40 hours Jesus spent in the tomb before his resurrection.

Lent is a period of penance that includes the dual discipline of abstinence and fasting. During Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain foods, habits or luxuries – such as meat, cakes and sweets, alcohol, smoking – for the duration of Lent (the money saved is always donated to charity). It is done as a form of penance and as a spiritual tool to tame the flesh and “sharpen the spirit” for prayer, meditation and contemplation in preparation for the celebration of Easter.

Lent lasts 40 days and the first day is always Ash Wednesday (the day after Shrove Tuesday). But there is always confusion as to when the fast ends! This is due to the fact that there are always 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, and partly due to confusion between the season of Lent and the liturgical “season” or period of fasting.
Lent (which is what most people think of as “Lent”) begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday (not to be confused with Easter Saturday, Saturday).
Easter). This is a period of 46 days. However, the six Sundays during this period are not fast days (Sundays are always holidays in the Christian calendar) and therefore do not count towards the 40 days of fasting.

The liturgical season of Lent also begins on Ash Wednesday, but does not end until the evening of Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday). Additionally, Palm Sunday (or the day before Palm Sunday) is sometimes considered the last day of Lent. This is incorrect and stems from a misunderstanding of the liturgical times of Lent and Holy Week. They are not mutually exclusive, and Lent continues through Holy Week (see above), meaning that the liturgical season of Lent ends on Maundy Thursday.
Purple is the color most associated with Lent – purple church vestments (altar cloths and liturgical vestments of priests) are used during this time. Purple is symbolic in two ways: it is the traditional color of mourning (commemorating the death of Jesus) and also a symbol of kingship (celebrating the coming of Christ as king).
In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Lent is called “Great Lent” and is the most important fasting time of the year in preparation for the most important celebration of the year, Paskuwa (Orthodox Easter Sunday). As in Western Christianity, the season of Lent varies in its dates from year to year, with the dates set on the date of Passover, which is a variable feast. Great Lent begins on Clean Monday (the beginning of the 7th week before Easter) and lasts 40 days (including Sundays) until Lazarus Saturday (the day before Sunday in Palm). The fast continues until Easter morning.

The holidays shown in this calendar in bold blue font represent the twelve major holidays of the Orthodox Church. Other feast days of some of the most popular venerated saints in Orthodox Churches around the world are written in black, regular font. Dates are listed according to the Julian or “old” calendar.
Many days of the year in the Orthodox Church are marked as fasting days (where we abstain from eating meat products, dairy products, fish, wine and oil). These fast days, marked in red, include the four canonical seasons of Lent (Lent, Apostolic Lent, Dormition and Advent) as well as almost every Wednesday and Friday. If the main festival falls on Lent, fish, wine and oil are allowed. In addition, there are many weeks without fasting and other special fasting days. Since the observance of the days of Lent varies slightly from church to church, please contact your local parish for more details.

We love this calendar and share it with our First Communion students. They like daily suggestions. Thank you for a wonderful thoughtful calendar for children.
This is exactly what I was looking for and I am so grateful! I want an advent calendar that matches the church’s advent dates, not just “December”. And I wanted something that focused on the thinking of others, not gifts for myself or just coloring a picture. This is a great resource for my youth group, thank you so much!
I love this advent activity calendar. The kids in our faith formation class loved it as much as their parents. thanks
