Lent is the annual time Christians celebrate before Easter. Lent dates are determined by the date of Easter, which is a movable feast, meaning that it falls on a different date each year. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and its observance (although not a liturgical season as Sundays are not fast days and therefore not counted – see below) lasts 40 days, reflecting Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the desert before beginning his ministry. . This can also be seen as a reflection of the 40 hours Jesus spent in the tomb before his resurrection.

It is a time of penance that includes the dual discipline of fasting and fasting. During Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or abstaining from certain foods, habits or luxuries – for example, meat, cakes and sweets, alcohol, smoking (the money saved is often given to charity). This is done both as a form of penance and as a spiritual tool to tame the body and “sharpen the spirit” to pray, think and reflect in preparation for Easter.

Lent lasts 40 days and the first day is always Ash Wednesday (the day after Shrove Tuesday). However, there is often confusion about when Lent ends! This is partly because there are actually always 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Passover Sunday, and partly because of the confusion between the fasting period of Lent and the liturgical “time” or Lent.

The liturgical season of Lent also begins on Ash Wednesday, but ends on the night of Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday). Additionally, Palm Sunday (or alternatively the day before Palm Sunday) is sometimes considered the last day of Lent. This is a mistake and is based on a misunderstanding of the liturgical periods of Lent and Holy Week. They are not mutually exclusive, and Lent actually takes place during Holy Week (see above), meaning that the liturgical season of Lent ends on Holy Thursday.

Purple is the color most associated with Lent – during which purple church vestments (altar vestments and liturgical vestments of priests) are used. Purple is symbolic in two ways: it is the traditional color of mourning (commemorating the death of Jesus) and it is also a symbol of royalty (celebrating the coming of Christ as King).

In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Lent is called “Great Lent” and is the most important fasting period of the year, in preparation for the most important holiday of the year, Easter (Orthodox Easter Sunday). As in Western Christianity, Lent varies from year to year with dates determined by the date of Easter, a movable feast. Great Lent begins on Clean Monday (the beginning of the 7th week before Easter) and lasts 40 days (including Sundays) until Lazarus Shabbat (the day before Palm Sunday).
