Usd 2023 Calendar – Due to spring break, there were no principal, student and/or staff reports. On the plaque were two letters of thanks, which were read by Diane Nunez. Daron Cowan commented that UHS’ Odyssey of the Mind team took first place at the state level.
Director of Student Learning Kevin Warner presented information about the family engagement survey that was sent to every family in the school district in January 2022. The survey asked questions about how the school district worked with its families. The data is used to determine Title I funding for school districts. According to Warner, 166 families responded. Sixty-five percent said they felt welcome in our local schools. Issues the school district will continue to work on include communication, student involvement in important decision-making, and connecting families to community resources. These problems were mentioned in about thirty percent of the responses. Warner told school board members the data is being used to improve the district’s relationship with families. One example he gave was using information in advertisements in the Ulysses News to meet families.

Warner said a survey will be sent to families at the end of the school year to see how the district has improved since the initial distribution. She plans to make the survey available at registration, parent/teacher conferences and other places where families can be contacted.

Next on the agenda was Superintendent Dave Younger, who sought approval of several middle and high school donations. One is a $600 donation from the Community Foundation of Grant County High School for MakerSpace library materials, and the other is a $350 donation from Pioneer Electric to the Teaching as a Career class for hotel rooms when the class goes on a trip . to K-State. Third was $2,128 from the Kepley Family Foundation through the GCCF for Math and Science (STEM) at the Kepley School. The board approved accepting donations.
Younger went on to share information from his annual Missouri Leadership Forum in Kansas City earlier this month. He noted that he considers this to be the best professional development he has received each year. He talked about some of the topics that were presented and discussed during the forum.
In legislative news, Younger said the parental rights and transparency bill is slowing down a bit, and he’ll try to get some information on where it’s at. One issue that will arise is the assessment of budgetary needs. Several influential education leaders support the bill and it will pass. Another hotly debated issue is KPERS refunds. The governor proposed transferring $1 billion in tax revenue to KPERS as a return of funds that had been “borrowed” in previous years.

The audit should begin on March 28. The younger one is a little worried about the dinner program. He explained that all students have received free lunch for the past two school years, but municipalities are still required to report the number of students who financially qualify for the free lunch program. A school district may lose “at risk” funds because they do not receive the necessary documents from eligible families.
At Younger’s old business, there was news about the construction of a field house. There was a problem with the removal and relocation of traffic lights. Engineers recommended what needed to be done, which would cost an additional $13,000. According to Younger, a little more was allowed for this, but not enough. He said that each traffic light pole now has a very good foundation and work on the project continues.
The board then sought Younger’s recommendation on the district’s 2022-2023 calendar. Younger said responses were received from 197 households, and the majority favored the second calendar option, which was the traditional calendar with two weeks of Christmas holidays. It was also the choice of the faculty on the calendar committee. Younger said he would recommend the second option to the board. The board voted to adopt this calendar.
