Modernist architect Paul Rudolph designed the buildings on campus in the early 1960s to isolate the campus from the outside world and provide what could be considered a Social Utopia.

The architecture of the building is similar to the Boston Government Service Center. Rudolph made the exterior and interior of each building of rough concrete (béton brut), the highest part of the style known as Brutalism, and demolished buildings with large windows. The stairs were a bit steep. Atria have also been placed in the Liberal Arts and Sciences and Factory buildings to give people a place to gather across the halls. These areas are also filled with hanging plants and indoor pots. The main door of each building looks over the Robert Karam Campanile, keeping the studios within the academic life zone where the classroom buildings are located. Large mounds of earth (fields) stand between the car parks, making them partially invisible from the original academic living space (although not from some additional additions such as the Charlton Business College building). The simpler buildings, particularly Wood Common and the halls of residence south of the main campus, were built to embody the late Rudolph’s modernist aesthetic.
In October 2013, Travel & Leisure named the university one of the most secretive universities in the United States. Comparing the library to a concrete spaceship, he described it as a symbol of the Brutalist architectural style, which has been loved and ironized since it was built in the 1960s.
There are many walking trails on campus, including wooded areas, grasslands, wetlands and ponds.
