by Southern Miss Fall 2023 Calendar – From selecting a new president to achieving success on the athletic field, 2022 is proving to be an exciting and outstanding year for USM. It is difficult to break down the list of notable achievements into a concise number. Below are some of the highlights from the past year. University Leadership In October, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Education completed the search for the 11th president of the University of Southern Mississippi by naming Dr. Joseph S. Paul as President. Paul is a Southern Miss alumnus who previously served the university as a Student Affairs Officer for more than 40 years. Before becoming vice president for Student Affairs in February 1993, he held several positions, including assistant director of Student Activities, associate vice president and dean of student development. He also holds the rank of professor in the USM College of Education and Psychology. https://www.usm.
Names-President.php In June, USM instructor Dr. Stephen Moser retired as vice president and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. Moser has held the position since 2015, but his leadership spans more than 30 years, from his time as Mississippi Pride director to his service as dean of the College of Arts and Letters, as well as a rich scholarship, pedagogy and mentor of generations of students as a music teacher specializing in instrumental conducting. Dr. Gordon C. Cannon assumed the position of Interim Vice President and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs on July 1, 2022. Dr. Cannon first joined the university’s faculty in 1987 and has led the university’s research project for nearly a decade. Before his appointment as administrator, the extensive work of Dr. Cannon in biochemistry and microbiology led to his selection as the Thomas Waring Bennett Distinguished Professor of Science and a Southern Miss Lifetime Achievement Award from the University Research Council. Dr. Kelly L. Lucas has been tapped to serve as Interim Vice President for Research effective July 1, 2022. As Associate Vice President for Research, Coastal Operations, Dr. Lucas has been instrumental in enhancing the portfolio of university research. Before her current appointment, Dra. Lucas served as director of the University’s Thad Cochran Center for Marine Aquaculture and was the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources’ first science officer. Research and academics The university maintained its excellent R1 rating following the review process of the 2021 Carnegie Classification of Higher Education Institutions, which was completed after the end of the public review period on 31 January. The R1 classification is assigned to doctoral universities with a very high level of research activity. USM’s online programs continued to receive impressive national recognition from US News and World Report in their 2022 rankings. USM ranks as the leader in online degree programs in the state, ranking 68th overall of nearly 400 online colleges and universities in the survey. . The 2022 national ranking marks an increase from last year’s No. 75 and an impressive jump from No. 93 two years ago. USM also ranks first in Mississippi for online degree programs for veterans and business degrees in the state. The ABET-accredited program is located at the Thames Polymer Science Research Center on the Hattiesburg campus. Over the past 52 years, USM has established itself as one of the world’s leading polymer science and engineering schools, preparing graduates to secure careers in industry. Announcing the launch of the Gulf Blue (SM) Navigator program for startups operating in the field of blue technology. This is the first innovation program in the Gulf of Mexico focused on the New Blue Economy. Program-refunded.php Earlier this summer, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Education approved a proposal from the USM College of Social Work to form a Trafficking Research and Training Center Humans (CHRT), the first center of its kind in the nation. . Andy Welch, a junior from Greenwood Springs, made history as the first college student to serve on the National Board of Directors of his sorority, Delta Tau Delta. An honors graduate majoring in finance, Welch is president of USM’s Tau Delta Zeta Chi chapter. As the first student director of the National Fraternity Council, he will be tasked with conveying the wants and needs of the undergraduate body to his fellow council members while chairing the Undergraduate Council, a committee that includes members of the undergraduate body.
